Saturday Solution: What is this liquid?

The teaser was:

Zona, the nutty professor, gathered the class one day for an experiment. Zona began, "I have in my hands a rock and a piece of wood. I am going to place them in this beaker of mysterious liquid, and you may observe what happens." Surprisingly, the rock floated and the wood sank! He turned to the class and said, "My question is: What is this mysterious liquid in the beaker?"

And the answer is: Water. : )

There is a rock, called pumice or volcanic glass, which will float in water.

There is also a wood that is so dense is will sink in water. It from the desert ironwood tree.

Saturday Solution: Wood fairies

The Tuesday teaser this week asked, what was one statement could be that would get Wild Man Dave set free?

Wild Man Dave said: "You will boil me in water."

The fairies were faced with a dilemma. If they boil him in water, that would make his statement true, which means he should have been fried in oil. They can only fry him in oil if he makes a true statement, but if they do, it would make his final statement false. The fairies had no way our of their situation so they were forced to set Wild Man Dave free.

Tuesday Teaser: Wood fairies

While exploring the wilds of Canada, Wild Man Dave was captured by hostile wood fairies. Brad, the powerful chief of the fairies told him he could make one final statement which would determine how he would die. If the statement he made was false, he would be boiled in water. If the statement were true, he would be fried in oil. Wild Man Dave found neither of this options too his liking, so he made a statement that got him out of this seemingly impossible situation.

What is the one statement he could make that might get him set free?

Saturday Solution: Golf Balls

Ok, so for those dying to know if they were thinking along the correct lines, here's the solution to Tuesday's Teaser.

The teaser was: "You have 9 golf balls. 8 of which are equal in weight. The ninth is slightly heavier then the rest. You also have a balancing scale. Can you use this scale two times and only two times in order to tell which ball is heavier?"

Now you know that 8 of the balls weigh exactly the same and the ninth is heavier than the rest.

So, yes you can tell which on is heavier with only two weighings.

All you have to do is separate the balls into 3 groups of 3. Place 3 balls on the left side of the scale and 3 balls on the right.

If they balance out, you know that the heavier ball is not one of those 6. If one side is heavier, you know that the heavier ball is one of those 3.

Now for your second use of the scale, place one of the remaining 3 balls on the left and one on the right. If they are equal, then it is the ball that was left out that is heavier. If either side is heavier, then that is the heavier ball.

Tuesday Teaser: Golf Balls

For today's teaser I thought this one appropriate as my hubby and daughter are out golfing.

I can handle the driving range, but I just don't have the staying power to make it thorugh even a 9 hole game of golf. I just don't. Normally if I go I drive the golf cart for hubby and our daughter rides along with hubby's father. But today they are walking. July in Missouri. And they are walking the golf course.

Um, nope. I think I am just fine staying home in the nice air conditioning watching cable TV. LOL

Anyways, here's the teaser.

"You have 9 golf balls. 8 of which are equal in weight. The ninth is slightly heavier then the rest. You also have a balancing scale. Can you use this scale two times and only two times in order to tell which ball is heavier?"

As always, feel free to post your guesses in the comments section. You can always remain anonymous if you are worried about your guess being wrong.

Tuesday Teaser: What Am I?

I am:

The beginning of eternity
The end of time and space
The beginning of every end
The end of every space

What am I?

(Note: This picture of the 3 Enterprise Ships has NOTHING to do with the riddle itself, but I thought it kinda neat and wanted to share it. Since this riddle mentions space ... well, there is a vague connection, but that's all. LOL)

Saturday Solution: What am I?

Sorry this post is a few days late. Had a family emergency and this is the first chance I have had to post.

The Tuesday Teaser was:
"I am the center of gravity, hold a capital situation in Vienna, and as I am foremost in every victory, am allowed by all to be invaluable. Though I am invisible, I am clearly seen in the midst of a river. I could name three who are in love with me and have three associates in vice. It is vain that you seek me for I have long been in heaven yet even now lie embalmed in the grave. What am I?"

The answer: the letter V

The police questioned the wife and staff and got these alibis:
The Wife said she was sleeping.
The Cook was cooking breakfast.

The Maid was getting the mail.

The police instantly arrested the murderer. Who did it and how did they know?"

Jamie Hill just guessed the correct answer today - the maid did it. There is no mail delivery on Sunday.

Saturday Solution: Apples

Yeah, I know. It's Sunday not Saturday. LOL

Yesterday was a fairly nice day so the family and I took the day off.

To refresh yor memory, the teaser was:
"A basket contains 5 apples.
How do you divide them among 5
kids so that each one has
an apple and one apple stays
in the basket?"

The answer to the teaser is:
You give each of four kids an apple,
and the fifth kid you give the basket
with an apple in it.
